This week the Central Bank of Nigeria said it will no longer issue foreign exchange for maize imports. This declaration is meaningless unless it is backed up with a comprehensive Nigerian Corn Plan

Ayo Akinfe

(1) When it comes to corn production, we are not doing too badly as we are the 11th largest maize producer in the world with an annual crop of about 11m tonnes

(2) However, our production costs are too high, making imports from countries like the US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and India cheaper. No matter how much the naira strengthens it is short term unless we start manufacturing

Ayo Akinfe

[1] So the naira strengthens slightly against the dollar again, trading at around N450 as the Central Bank of Nigeria keeps releasing more foreign currency, ending the scarcity
