Governor Abiodun survives fierce PDP challenge in Ogun State as Inec declares him re-elected

NIGERIA'S Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) has officially declared Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor in Saturday's gubernatorial elections and duly returned.

In a close-fought race, Governor Abiodun, who faced a stiff challenge from Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), managed to scrape home. Official results from Inec showed that Governor Abiodun polled 276,298 votes while Mr Adebutu scored a total of 262,383 votes.

Coming in a distant third place was Biyi Otegbeye of the Africa Democratic Party, who polled a total of 94,754 votes. Mr Otegbeye was being backed by former governor Senator Ibikunle Amusan but despite this, failed to have any significant impact on the campaign.

According to Professor Kayode Adebowale, Inec's returning officer in the elections, incumbent Governor Abiodun was duly returned having been lawfully elected. Winning with a relatively small margin, Governor Abiodun who was first elected in 2019, now has a mandate for a second four-year term.
