Labour Party's Rhodes-Vivour says he has had death threats in the run-up to governorship elections

GBADEGO Rhodes-Vivour the Labour Party's gubernatorial candidate in next week's governorship elections in Lagos State has cried out that his life is under threat as there have been assassination attempts of late.

On Saturday February 25, Nigerians went to the polls to elect a new president and the main gladiators in the contest were Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and former Kano State governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP). Nigeria's National Electoral Commission (Inec) has declared Asiwaju Tinubu the winner but the PDP and Labour Party are disputing the result.

With the atmosphere between the parties heavily polluted, Nigerians will return to the polls next Saturday on Match 18 for gubernatorial and state houses of assemblies elections. In Lagos State, it is looking like there will be a very tight race between incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of the APC and Mr Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

Up until a few months ago, this would have been considered unthinkable but in the presidential elections, Peter Obi of the Labour Party trumped Asiwaju Tinubu in Lagos State. Given that Asiwaju Tinubu is a former governor and Lagos State is considered his stronghold,  the shock result has raised the real prospect of Governor Sanwoolu losing the gubernatorial contest.

Speaking on Arise Television this morning, Mr Rhodes-Vivour has alleged that he has been receiving death threats and there has been an assassination attempt on his life. He also confirmed that some members of his team were assaulted by gunmen suspected to be political thugs in the Epe Local Government Area of the state yesterday.

Mr Rhodes-Vivour said: “There have been lots of threats. We have gotten a lot of intel about potential assassination attempts on my life. Yes, it happened in Epe. We had Honourable Wale Oluwo with us and we also had Honourable Najid of the PDP working with us and they were also shot at in Epe yesterday.”
