Nollywood actress Hilda Dokubo appointed as acting chair of Labour Party in Rivers State

NOLLYWOOD actress Hilda Dokubo has been appointed as the new acting chairman of the River State chapter of the Labour Party as a replacement for Dienye Pepple who was sacked following the dissolution of his executive committee.

Over the last week, there has been a lot of turmoil in the Rivers State chapter of the Labour Party with the national leadership dissolving the executive committee of the local branch for anti-party activities and corruption. Things started getting heated when Mr Pepple announced that the party would be fielding a joint candidate with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections.

He said that the Labour Party has adopted the PDP governorship candidate Sir Siminalayi Fubara as its candidate too. He added that following the development, the party would no longer be fielding its candidate Beatrice Itubo but in a swift reaction to this announcement, the party's national leadership denied the story and dissolved Mr Pepple's executive committee.

Julius Abure, the Labour Party's national chairman, dissolved the party’s executive council in Rivers State, accusing it of anti-party activities and corruption in the management of funds. he also accused the executive committee of standing by when the party's presidential mandate was openly stolen.

Taking the matter further now, Mr Abure appointed Ms Dokubo as chair to be supported by other members of the interim executive committee including Philip Loveday as secretary and Gogo Wellington as publicity secretary. He added that the appointment letters they were sent indicated that they would be in office for an initial period of one month.

This new executive committee will now preside over the forthcoming March 18 governorship and state of assembly elections. In Rivers State, the Labour Party is involved in a two-horse race with the Peoples Democratic Party for the governorship.
