Bundesliga sides Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen step up interest in Chuba Akpom

GERMAN Bundesliga sides Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen have joined the ranks of clubs inquiring after former Arsenal academy product Chuba Akpom in light of his sterling performance in the English Championship this season.

Akpom, 27, has enjoyed the best season of his career so far having netted 21 goals in 28 Championship games for Middlesboro during the current campaign, making him the league’s leading goalscorer. There was Premier League interest in him in January with the likes of Crystal Palace and Everton reportedly keen but now there is interest from overseas too.

Apparently, Bundesliga duo Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen are keeping tabs on Akpom’s performances in the Championship, with a view to launching a bid for his services in the summer. Akpom is out of contract in 2024, but Boro boss Michael Carrick has recently suggested that the club are looking into extending the striker’s stay.

Middlesbrough currently sit in third place of the Championship table with Saturday’s 5-0 win over Reading closing the gap on second place Sheffield United to just four points. Given how prolific Akpom has been this season, interest from Europe’s top leagues was always going to emerge at some point.

For Boro, this emerging interest could perhaps be easily fended off if they secure promotion to the Premier League but failing that, they might have to cash in on their star striker this summer. Right now, all of Middlesbrough’s focus will be on the Championship and securing promotion to the Premier League next season.
