Okorocha promise Imo State that he will not empty the treasury when he leaves office next year

IMO State governor Rochas Okorocha has promised that he will not loot the state's treasury when he leaves office next year as has become the norm across Nigeria with those vacating office generally leaving the coffers empty.

Nigerians go to the polls next year and Imo, like most other states will be electing a new chief executive as Governor Okorocha has served his mandatory two terms. At the moment, Governor Okorocha's son-in-law Uche Nwosu is the front-runner to succeed him when elections hold in February 2019 but this move is already being resisted by several people across Imo State.

Speaking in Government House Owerri while receiving a delegation from Ideato North that included traditional chiefs and local community leaders, Governor Okorocha said that whoever won, he would try and leave them a healthy treasury. Elections are due in February next year and the swearing in of a new governor will take place on May 29 2019.

Governor Okorocha said: “The usual feeling is for outgoing governors to pack money and leave at the end of their tenure but I will not pack money. I will continue to work till 11.30am of May 29, 2019.”

He also said when he came to run for the governorship, no one believed that one could win, especially those from the opposition party but he has proven them wrong. Governor Okorocha added that he still has a few months to go but before he departs he will continue with the revolution which he began.
