Nigeria wins her first medal at Commonwealth Games after men's table tennis team picks up silver

NIGERIA has won her first medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games taking place in Australia after the men's table tennis team picked up a silver after being defeated by India in final of the tournament.

Easing the growing concern of sports fans, Nigeria qualified for the final of the table tennis event after defeating England 3-2 in the semi-final. However, team Nigeria could not realise its dream of winning the ultimate prize as the Indian team defeated them in three straight sets to secure gold.

Meanwhile, Nigerian sprinter, Seye Ogunlewe narrowly missed out of finishing in a medal position in the men’s 100 metres final of the games yesterday. Ogunlewe came fourth after recording a personal best time of 10.19 seconds in a photo-finish with Jamaican Yohan Blake.

A former Olympic 200 metres silver medallist, the Jamaican also posted 10.19 seconds. However, it was Blake who was given third-place and the bronze medal after a much-deliberated review by the officials.

Enoch Adegoke, the other Nigerian in the final, finished seventh with a time of 10.35 seconds. Akani Simbine from South Africa won the 100m gold with a time of 10.03 seconds, while his compatriot Henricho Bruintjies won silver with a time of 10.17 seconds.
