Buhari formally declares that he will be seeking a second term in next year's presidential elections

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has ended the speculation about whether he will stand in next year's general elections by formally announcing that he will be a candidate and shall seek the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

First elected in 2015 for a four-year term, President Buhari is eligible to stand again when Nigeria goes to the polls in February next year. So far, he has avoided answering questions as to whether he will be a candidate or not but the president's body language has suggested that he will run.

This afternoon, the speculation was finally put to rest when Bashir Ahmad, President Buhari's personal assistant on new media, issued a statement saying the president was in the 2019 race. Making the announcement via Twitter, Mr Ahmad confirmed that the president will now look for the endorsement of the APC.

For months now, various support groups have been drumming support for President Buhari in what appears to be a case of him testing the waters. However, while attending the fifth European Union-African Union Summit in Abidjan, last year, the president gave a hint that suggested he would likely run for another term.
