Presidency issues statement on General Abdulsalam saying he has left hospital and is in a London apartment

NIGERIA'S presidency has issued an official statement on the health status of former military ruler General Abdulsalam Abubakar saying that he is recovering well from his recent treatment and has even been discharged from hospital.

Yesterday, it was revealed that General Abubakar had been flown to the UK for emergency medical treatment after suffering what is believed to have been a partial stroke. He had originally been flown to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates but as his condition deteriorated, he was moved to the UK.

Providing an update on the matter, President Muhammadu Buhari’s special assistant on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, allayed fears that the situation was chromic. he added that General Abdulsalam, 80, was stable and recuperating in a private apartment in the UK after treatment.

According to Mallam Shehu, he visited General Abubakar, who had already left the hospital and taken to a private apartment. In a tweet, Mallam Shehu said there was no cause for alarm as the general is recovering well.

Mallam Shehu said: “Alhamdu Lillahi for Allah’s mercy. I just ended a visit to His Excellency Abdulsalami Abubakar, former head of state. He is out of hospital in a London apartment and apparently in no serious condition.

“He was his jovial self, maintaining a keen interest in developments back at home in Nigeria. Please, no cause for alarm.”

Last Wednesday, General Abdulsalami could not lead the National Peace Committee, which he chairs to Ado-Ekiti for the signing of peace pact by political parties and their candidates in the governorship election. Also, his 80th birthday on June 13 was low-key due to his illness.

At Ado-Ekiti, General Abdulsalami was represented by the Catholic bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah at the event where candidates signed undertakings to be peaceful before, during and after the election. Last Saturday, the elections held and Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner.
