Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest look to bring Taiwo Awoniyi back to England

NEWLY-promoted English Premier League side Nottingham Forest have opened discussions with the German Bundesliga side Union Berlin about signing Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi during the current transfer window.

Awoniyi, 24, joined Bundesliga side Union Berlin permanently last summer from Liverpool after having a successful loan spell with the club. He since went on to have a brilliant season in Die Bundesliga, stealing the headlines with his amazing performance coupled with goals to ensure that Union Berlin secured a place in the Uefa Europa League next season.

A lanky targetman, Awoniyi currently has a £20m as release clause in his contract and Nottingham Forest may just activate this in a bid to bring him to England. Former Premier League champion Liverpool who sold Awoniyi to Union Berlin were unable to use him after they failed to get him the compulsory work permit.

Forest could secure a work permit for the striker this time around, however, as he is now a full international. With four senior caps to his name now, Awoniyi has represented and played for Nigeria in the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon and has also featured in World Cup qualifiers.
