FORMER Benue State governor Senator George Akume has lashed out at President Muhammadu Buhari informing him that the people of the state are not happy with his administration over his handling of the Fulani herdsmen crisis.
President Buhari is currently visiting Benue State in what is his first trip there since the recent spate of deaths brought about by Fulani herdsmen attacks. Over recent months, Fulani cattle herdsmen have stepped up their attacks in Benue State, killing hundreds in murderous assaults on farming villages.
Following the latest spate of attacks, President Buhari has come under attack for failing to address the crisis and over his indifference to the killings. Not only has he failed to go after the murderous herdsmen but no government representative attended the funerals of the victims and the president has failed to address the nation on the matter.
Today, President Buhari visited Benue State for the first time since the killings and Senator Akume used the occasion to ask him to end the attacks. He recalled that Benue people voted overwhelmingly for President Buhari in 2015 despite the fact the then senate president, David Mark, who is a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), hailed from the state.
Senator Akume said: “Your Excellency, you could recall that Senator David Mark was senate president while Suswam was the governor of the State, yet the Tiv people voted for you in 2015. We have no federal project in Benue State, Governor Ortom does not make laws, Benue people made the law.
"Joseph Tarka fought for the unity of our country Nigeria. Mr President the Tiv people are not happy about your reaction towards the killing of Tiv farmers by Fulani herdsman."
In response to the killings, the Benue State government passed the Benue Open Grazing Prohibition Law but some herdsmen refused to obey it. In response to the bill signed into law by Governor Ortom, some herdsmen stepped up their attacks on farming communities.
