Macban leader killed in Kaduna by armed bandits after he was kidnapped and ransom paid

ARMED kidnappers have killed the chairman of the Miyetti Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (Macban) chapter in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi popularly known as Danbardi.

Of late, armed hoodlums have held Nigeria ransom, with kidnappers, most of them ethnic Fulanis, abducting innocent on a daily basis for huge sums. Macban has come to the defence of these kidnappers and had urged the Nigerian state not to move against them, saying they had no option as their cattle grazing routes have been destroyed.

In a classic case of the chickens coming home to roost, it now appears that the kidnappers have turned on Macban, killing one of its leading members. Othman Ngelzarma, Macban's general secretary, said that the deceased, aged 58, was killed by kidnappers yesterday, as his lifeless body was found by the roadside after he had been kidnapped from his home in Lere on September 16 and a ransom paid.

Mr Ngelzarma said: “The death of Abubakar brings to five the number of Macban officials killed either by bandits, kidnappers or cattle rustlers this year across the country. Alhaji Abubakar, aged 58 was kidnapped on the 16th of September and after paying ransom his dead body was found by the roadside on Friday, September 17, on the outskirts of Lere town.

“While we condole with the family of the deceased and the Kaduna State Chapter of Macban, we call on the security agencies to properly investigate this and a lot of other dastardly acts across the country and bring the culprits to justice. The challenge is making it almost impossible for our members to conduct their businesses in peace.

This is partly responsible for the escalating cost of livestock and livestock products and if the insecurity continues, it might collapse the livestock industry in the country. We call on the federal government to, therefore, ensure that the new policies geared towards improved livestock production are properly implemented."
