House deputy speaker says Senator Abaribe should be in jail for not producing Nnamdi Kanu

DEPUTY speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives Hon Idris Wase has lashed out at senate minority leader Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe saying he should be in detention over his failure to produce Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) leader Nnamdi Kanu who he stood bail for.

Back in September 2017, Mr Kanu broke bail and absconded from Nigeria after Nigerian Army troops invaded his family's compound in Afaraukwu, near Umuahia, the Abia State capital. Senator Abaribe had stood as one of his sureties under Mr Kanu's stringent bail conditions which required him to produce at least one senator.

Controversial Hon Wase, who recently caused a storm when he told the Nigerian diaspora that they have to right to comment or participate in debates about how the country is being run, re-opened the matter today during a session on the floor of the House. He cited the example of Senator Ali Ndume who was detained by Justice Okon Abang, over his failure to produce Abdulrasheed Maina, the former head of the Pension Reformed Task Team, who he had stood for as surety.

Hon Wase made the remarks while responding to a point of order raised by Hon Sada Soli yesterday in which he accused the House minority leader Hon Ndudi Elumelu of misrepresenting facts in a debate on security. In his reaction to the point of order Hon Wase said ordinarily, for failing to produce Mr Kanu Senator Abaribe, should be in prison, just like Senator Ndume.

“He bailed Kanu Nnamdi and during the Endsars, we knew what happened. Kanu then was the one who was asking for the head of Tinubu, destroy this, destroy that in the nation but we have allowed him.

“Ndume for bailing Maina was taken to prison for not producing him but we allowed this man to go as opposition person. I am a presiding officer and I wish to be neutral as much as possible,” Hon Wase added.
