Arsenal join the race to sign Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze at the end of the season

ENGLISH Premier League giants Arsenal have joined the race to sign Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze at the end of the season as the club looks to strengthen its weak forward line after what has been a disappointing campaign.

Currently sitting in mid table, Arsenal have only scored 44 goals this season, compared with say Manchester City's 69, Manchester United's 64, Leicester City's 55, Chelsea and Leeds United's 50 each and Liverpool's 54. A creative winger often likened to Dutch ace Arjen Robben, Chukwueze is seen as someone with the creativity to open defences.

Currently playing for Spanish team Villarreal under former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, Chukwueze was a potential target for Liverpool last season but a deal never materialised. Apart from Liverpool, Everton and West Ham are both said to be interested in the winger and may make a bid for him.

However, Arsenal appear to be the most desperate for Chukwueze as Willian has failed to live up to expectations since joining as a free agent from Chelsea. There are also doubts over if Martin Odegaard will remain permanently at the Emirates after his loan spell from Real Madrid ends and Nicolas Pepe has also not delivered since he arrived in 2019.

West Ham are currently looking for a new centre-forward and although Chukwueze does not play through the middle, he is considered as someone who could provide more attacking depth. As for Everton, there have been rumours about a potential James Rodriguez departure, making Chukwueze an ideal replacement.

Villarreal and Arsenal are due to face each other in the semi finals of the Europa League, with the first leg due in Spain on April 29 and the second leg coming up on May 6 at the Emirates. This will give Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta an opportunity to take a good look at Chukwueze.
