Everton confirm Super Eagles winger Onyekuru will not need surgery and will be back in action soon

ENGLISH Premiership side Everton has revealed that Super Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru will not need surgery on a knee injury he recently suffered and should be back in action before the end of the season.

Onyekuru, 20, is one of Nigeria's brightest prospects and is an Everton players who has been loaned out to Belgian giants Anderlecht. In December, he sustained a serious knee injury during a league match against one of his former clubs KAS Eupen and initial reports suggested his season was effectively over and that could also mean his hopes of playing at the World Cup in Russia.

However, Everton have since recalled the player so they can assess his injury themselves and the club is now confident that he will recover in a few months time. Yesterday, the club confirmed that Onyekuru is making progress, that he would not be needing surgery and he is on track to play again this season.

Onyekuru who has scored nine goals in 14 league starts for Anderlecht thanked Everton for the love and care he has received since he commenced his treatment, saying it has played a role in speeding up his recovery. He added that he is hopeful of returning to action before the season ends.

"It is amazing here as the people are good people, always friendly and showing care. I feel love and with that love I will recover even more quickly.

“When I first got injured the whole picture was quite bad but fortunately it was not as severe as we first feared, so, hopefully, I will be back and ready to play before the end of the season. The first aim is to get back and finish the season in Belgium, and there will be a few weeks of the league season remaining, so it makes sense for me to end the season there and prepare for the World Cup," Onyekuru added.

Considered to be one of the brightest stars Nigeria has at the moment, Onyekuru is a pacy winger with lots of panache and flair. He also has a sharp eye for goal and has topped the scoring charts in Belgium over the last two seasons.
