West Ham consider purchasing Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru from French side Monaco

ENGLISH Premier League side West Ham United have made enquiries about signing Super Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru from French side Monaco before the end of the January transfer window.

Onyekuru, 23, who was once an Everton player but never played in England as he was loaned out immediately after being signed, was once touted as the next big thing from Nigeria. However, his star has waned of late, as he is currently is struggling for game time in France, featuring just four times this season.

It is believed that Monaco may be prepared to cut its losses and Onyekuru can move for a €1.5m loan fee, subject to a €5.5m permanent deal. This should be an easy sum for West ham to come up with but the club is likely to face stiff competition from Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

West Ham are looking to strengthen their attack following the departure of Ivorian international striker Sebastien Haller and landing Onyekuru could end up being a bargain. While on loan at Anderlecht and Galatasaray, Onyekuru scored 26 goals at both clubs before moving to Monaco in the summer of 2019.

He has only played eight times for Monaco, however, returning to Galatasaray to spend the second half of last season on loan. Another loan move is now on the cards, and while Monaco are eyeing a third reunion, they are yet to make an offer and are now open to listening to offers from elsewhere.

Onyekuru offers electric pace and can play on the wings and as a number nine and West Ham manager David Moyes could do with such a quality finisher. Onyekuru scored 22 league goals in the Belgian first division for Eupen in the 2016/17, season, prompting Everton to buy him.
