Rohr sets his sights on Fulham midfielder Josh Onomah after his play-off heroics

SUPER Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has stepped up his interest in Fulham midfielder Josh Onomah following his dazzling display in his team's recent Championship play-offs that saw his team qualify for the English Premier League.

Onomah, 23, was outstanding in the recent play-offs that saw Fulham beat Cardiff City 3-2 on aggregate in the semi finals and Brentford 2-1 in the final. In the first leg of the semi final, Onomah scored a wonder goal, helping his team to a comfortable 2-0 victory, which gave Fulham a good cushion going into the second leg.

As a result of his heroics, Onomah, who began his career at Tottenham Hotspurs has now established himself as a target for Mr Rohr. However, having played for the England U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 teams, he will need to go a Fifa switch before he is eligible to play for Nigeria.

Coach Rohr, however, remains undeterred and wants the midfielder to commit his future to Nigeria on time, so that he can file for a switch of allegiance process before the start of the 2022 World Cup qualification rounds. A tidy central midfielder who dribbles well and has an ey6e for goal, Onomah would be competing for starting slots in the Eagles alongside the likes of Wilfred Ndidi, Joe Aribo, Kelechi Nwakali, Alhassan Yusuf, Alex Iwobi, Ogene Etebo, Ramon Azeez and possibly Ebere Eze.

Already Coach Rohr has sought to secure the services of Queens Park Rangers midfielder Ebere, who has also been sensational over the last season. Like Onomah, Ebere has also featured for the England youth team, so will equally need to go through a Fifa switch before he is eligible to play for Nigeria.

Both players will have higher profiles over the forthcoming season as they will be featuring in the English Premier League every week. Onomah will be playing for Fulham, while Ebere is currently the subject of numerous bids from several clubs including Leeds United, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspurs and West Bromwich Albion.

Born in Enfield, in north London to Nigerian parents, Onomah was in the England U-20 team 2017 World Cup winning team. He joined Spurs as a kid and was first called up to the first team on January 5 2015, where he was an unused substitute in their 1–1 draw away to Burnley in the FA Cup third round but made his debut nine days later in the replay.
