Newcastle initiate talks to purchase Kelechi Iheanacho from Leicester at the end of the season

NEWCASTLE United have made initial enquiries with Leicester City to sign Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho this summer with a view to making him the focal point of their attack during the 2020/21 season.

Iheanacho, 23, started off the season slowly but has gradually found his feet, scoring 10 goals in 24 Leicester appearances this season despite starting just 15 games. Currently second choice striker behind Leicester legend Jamie Vardie, Iheanacho is not guaranteed a starting place at the King Power Stadium, irrespective of his form.

Although sitting comfortably in mid table and not facing any relegation threat, Newcastle United have one of the lowest scoring rates in the English Premier League, only finding the back of the net 36 times this season, compared with say Leicester's 65 goals. Brazilian striker Joelinton bought for £40m by Newcastle last summer, has been hugely disappointing, only finding the back of the net twice.

Newcastle are currently the subject of a huge takeover bid, which if it goes ahead will pump money into the club. However, the club has said it will look to sign Iheanacho whether a takeover goes through, or not.

Iheanacho is renowned for his pace, ability to score goals out of nothing and his versatility, as he can play out wide as well as up front. Bought by Leicester for £25m in the summer of 2017 Iheanacho's contract with the club until 2022.

Originally brought to England by Manchester City, Iheanacho played second fiddle to Sergio Aguero while at the club but still managed 21 goals in 64 games. At Leicester, he has 20 goals and 12 assists in 87 games despite starting just 41 matches in total.

Leicester City are currently sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table and are hopeful of qualifying for the European Champions league next season. Iheanacho's compatriot Wilfred Ndidi, is also being linked with several other clubs as he is regarded as the best anchorman in the Premier League and Leicester will struggle to retain him at the end of the season.
