Ndubuisi Egbo set to become the first Nigerian manager ever to win a European league title

FORMER Super Eagles goalkeeper Ndubuisi Egbo is on course to become the first Nigerian ever to manage a European clubside to a national league title as his clubside KF Tirana is two wins away from winning the Albanian title.

Egbo, 46 played for the Super Eagles between 1999 and 2002 during which time he manned goal for Tirana, winning three trophies with the club. Following his retirement from playing in 2011, Egbo went into coaching, becoming the goalkeeping coach of another Albanian side Bylis before returning to Tirana in 2014 in the same capacity.

In 2019, Egbo was promoted to become Tirana's head coach and is now on course to lead them to a league title. Apart from being the most successful Albanian teams in all domestic competitions, Tirana have also put in the best performances in Europe, reaching the Round of 16 in European Competitions four times.

With just two matches to go in the league, Tirana is leading the Albanian top flight with 66 points from 33 games and need six points to be crowned champions of the division. Second-placed Kukesi are four points adrift Tirana with 62 points from the same games played.

Tirana will face Flamurtari, Laci and Bylis in their remaining three league fixtures of the season. Egbo could still even win a double as his side trail seventh-place Bylis 2-1 ahead of the second leg of the Albanian Cup final billed for Wednesday but if they win the tie, they could win that trophy too.

Egbo said: “We still have three games to finish the league and it’s not over yet. We are four points ahead of the team in second position and we need maximum points from two of our remaining games to be champions, that is assuming the team in the second position win all their games.”
