Gernot Rohr agrees new two-year deal with NFF that will see him manage Eagles until after 2022 World Cup

SUPER Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has agreed a new two-year contract with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) that will see him remain in charge of the team up until the end of the 2022 World Cup.

First appointed in August 2016, Mr Rohr signed an initial two-year deal with the NFF and while he has been in charge has guided the Eagles to the World Cup and to an African Cup of Nations bronze medal. With the 2022 looming and qualifiers expected to start this year, Mr Rohr has been awarded a contract extension with a brief to improve on his past records.

His new contract also compels him to live in Nigeria and scout local players as well as pay tax on his income, from which he was previously exempt. Both the NFF and Mr Rohr have agreed on the terms of the deal, with the formal contract expected to be sent to the coach next week, after which he will sign it and return it to the NFF.

One NFF source said: “He has accepted the new terms and it’s just a matter of days before the deal is sealed. He loves Nigeria and he is excited to coach the Eagles again."

Mr Rohr, whose contract with the NFF expires in June, had been in contract renewal talks with the federation since the beginning of the year. Mr Rohr, 66, signed a two-year contract renewal in January 2018, after qualifying the national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He has a 59.18% win ratio with the Eagles, winning 29 games, drawing 11 matches and losing nine out of the 49 games for which he has been in charge. He has also successfully rebuilt the team, introducing players like Francis Uzoho, Ola Aina, Collins Jamiu, William Ekong, Joe Aribo, Victor Osimhen, Samuel Kalu, Samuel Chukwueze, etc into the squad.
