Nigeria’s post-coronavirus industrial development plan

By Ayo Akinfe

(1) We shall manufacture 2m ventilators annually
(2) We shall manufacturer 20m facemasks annually
(3) We shall build at least two general hospitals in each of our 774 local government areas
(4) We shall set ourselves a 20 year target of producing everything we consume locally
(5) We shall develop a national carrier that can be called upon at any point in time to repatriate our citizens from anywhere in the world at 24 hours notice
(6) We shall aim to have one doctor to every 100,000 citizens
(7) Crude oil export receipts shall not account for more than 10% of government revenue
(8) Every Nigerian shall have access to pipe-borne water. At the most, a communal tap must be within 1km of every home
(9) No product shall be exported unless it is at least semi processed. There must be at least 50% value addition to every item we export
(10) Nigeria’s healthcare system must generate at least $20bn a year from operations and treatment of other Africans who visit. Our goal is to develop a local industry similar to what prevails in India and Cuba
