Home-based Eagles beat hosts Ghana 2-0 in Wafu Cup of Nations to qualify for semi final

NIGERIA'S home-based Super Eagles beat Ghana's Black Stars 2-0 yesterday in the ongoing West African Football Union (Wafu) Cup of Nations to book a place in the semi finals thanks to two second half goals.

Goals from Nigerian league top scorer Tony Okpotu and Peter Eneji secured the victory over hosts Ghana in Nigeria's third group game of the tournament. Ghana had been assured of a first place finish in Group A after victories over Guinea and Mali in their first two games but the Eagles needed maximum points after draws in their opening two games.

After a goalless first half, Nigeria took the lead seven minutes into the second half through Okpotu before man of the match, Eneji added a second three minutes later with a half volley into the bottom corner. After taking the lead, the Eagles did well to hang on and will now face Group B leaders on Thursday.

In Group A’s other game which mattered little after Nigeria’s win, Guinea and Mali battled out to a 1-1 draw in Elmina. Later today, Niger will face Benin in Elmina while Senegal and Ivory Coast will lock horns at the Cape Sports Stadium in a group where all four teams still have a chance of progressing to the semi final.

Niger Republic are currently top the group with four points from their opening two games while Senegal and Benin have three points apiece. Ivory Coast are bottom of the group with a solitary point from their opening two matches.
