Dele Alampasu signs three year deal with Latvian Europa League-bound side Ventspils

FORMER Golden Eaglets goalkeeper Dele Alampasu has signed a three year contract with Latvian first division side FK Ventspils that will keep him at the club until January 2022 in a move that has revived his flagging career.

Alampasu, 23, was Nigeria's goalkeeper at the U17 Fifa World Cup in 2013 where he won the golden glove, having been adjusted the best goal tender at the tournament. He subsequently signed for Portuguese side Feirense but was released by the side last year and has been without a club ever since.

Last week, Alampasu got his career back on track and was handed the number 12 jersey at Ventspils, in a move that should see him get back to his best. He could make his competitive debut for Ventspils when they face RFS in their league opener on March 15, when the Latvian league resumes.

Alampasu said: "When I got an offer from Ventspils, I thought it was imperative to take such a great opportunity. This is a great opportunity to take it to a new level and get to know the European competitions, which has always been my goal.

"I know that FKV is always playing on the international scene and that leaves a huge impression. Honestly, I was shocked to learn that Ventspils had already played in the Europa League Group Tournament and I want to repeat such a club achievement.

"Of course, the most important goal is to win the Latvian Championship, which is a difficult task but you just have to set it up. I see that all the guys in FKV are in the mood to win, all are ambitious and want to succeed and I like the atmosphere here as a family where everyone supports each other."

Ventspils, who have won six Latvian league titles and seven FA cups, will be participating in next season's Europa League. Featuring Nigerian midfielder Ibrahim Alfa, the club finished third in the just-concluded 2019 season behind FC Riga and RFS.
