Buhari to address UN General Assembly in New York on the 19th of September

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to address the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States on Tuesday September 19 in what will be his first visit outside the country since returning from medical attention abroad.

On August 20, President Buhari returned to Nigeria after spending 105 days in London  where he has been receiving treatment since May 7. For over three months, President Buhari had been reconvalescing at Abuja House, the official residence of the Nigerian high commissioner to the UK, during which rumours about the state of his health circulated.

Since returning to Nigeria, the president has kept a low profile and has been working from his official residence. However, in what will be his first major assignment since returning, he will be travelling to the UN where he has been listed as number seven on the provincial list of speakers.

President Buhari is expected to speak at the UN General Assembly after the leaders of Brazil, the US, Guinea, Switzerland, Jordan and Slovakia. Since his return from London, President Buhari has not attended any public event outside of Aso Villa and his country home in Daura, Katsina State.

Also, he has attended only one Federal Executive Council meeting since he returned three weeks ago. He has left most of the day-t6o-day activities in the presidency to vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

Mallam Garba Shehu, President Buhari's spokesman, said: “I cannot tell you the time he will be going because it can change but I know he is expected to be the eighth speaker at the UN. So, he will be there and he will speak.”
