NFF says it will only renew Rohr's contract if he agrees to a new clause compelling him to live in Nigeria

NIGERIAN Football Federation (NFF) officials have indicated that they will only renew the contract of Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr when it expires in June next year of he agrees to a new clause that compels him to live in the country.

Mr Rohr took over the Eagles in August and has since guided the team to the World Cup and the 2019 African Cup of Nations. However, his four year contract is up for review in June 2020 and although the coach has done well with regards to rebuilding the team, there is concern that he does not spend enough time in Nigeria and as such has not been able to uncover local talent.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick has revealed that the federation is open to continued working with Mr Rohr if he will agree to new clauses that would be inserted into a contract. He added that Mr Rohr must be ready to stay and work in Nigeria instead of living in France and saunter into the country only when the Eagles have engagements.

In addition, Mr Pinnick said the coach must also be ready to watch league games so as to discover talents that will eventually make the grade for the national team. Since Mr Rohr took over, very few players in the local league have been invited to the national team and critics put this down to his refusal to scout.

Mr Pinnick said: “He needs to move around, watch some of the league games. We are not saying take a player from here and bring him to the Super Eagles immediately,

“Rohr’s contract is due for renewal in June and we don’t have any issue with him at the moment. What we are going to do is strengthen the clauses in his contract, we are going to domesticate Gernot Rohr in Nigeria and domesticate him to our leagues."
