Shiite leader Sheikh El-Zakzaky arrives back in Abuja and is immediately taken into custody

ISLAMIC Movement of Nigeria (IMN) leader Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeena have arrived back in Nigeria after their failed medical trip to India which was marred with constant disagreements over which doctors would treat him.

On Tuesday morning, Sheikh El-Zakzaky arrived in the Indian city of New Delhi where he was to receive treatment at the Medanta Hospital. However, the trip was marred by disagreements over which doctors would treat the Shiite leader after Sheikh El-Zakzaky refused to be treated by doctors he did not know.

He claimed that he was being held in conditions worse than he detention in Nigeria and insisted that he be treated by his own chosen doctors. With both sides unable to reach an agreement on the matter, Sheikh El-Zakzaky returned to Nigeria and landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja this morning at 11.40 am onboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

Upon arriving, the sheikh was whisked through the presidential wing of the airport by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives and immediately taken into detention. Security operatives did not allow journalists or his supporters to have access to the sheikh as he was immediately driven away in an ambulance that was waiting on the tarmac.

Sheikh El-Zakzaky, who was taken into detention in Nigeria in December 2015, recently won a court ruling in which he was allowed to go to India for medical treatment. According to his doctors, following his incarceration, he has suffered several mild strokes and is reported to have lost sight in one of his eyes.
