Resume or Resign protests in Abuja and London force Buhari to return to Nigeria today

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari is to return to Nigeria later today and address the nation on Monday in a move designed to bring an end to spate of protests concerning his continued stay in London where he has been receiving treatment since May 7.

For over three months now, President Buhari has been reconvalescing at Abuja House, the official residence of the Nigerian high commissioner to the UK in London. Over the last week, his continued stay has sparked off a series of protests in Nigerian and the UK with  Resume or Resign demonstrations taking place both in Abuja and London.

Last night, demonstrators held a vigil outside Abuja House, demanding that the president return and the protests were scheduled to continue. In what appears to the presidency's response to the protests, it has been announced that President Buhari will return to Nigeria today, arriving in Abuja later this evening.

Over the last fortnight, a series of high profile visitors have been to London to see President Buhari and pictures have been released showing that he is now well. Femi Adesina, President Buhari's spokesman, said that the president will leave today and will address the nation on Monday morning.

Mr Adesina said: “President Muhammadu Buhari returns to the country later today after receiving medical attention in London. The president had left the country on May 7, this year, after handing over power to vice president Yemi Osinbajo, who has functioned as acting president since then.

“President Buhari is expected to speak to Nigerians in a broadcast by 7am on Monday, August 21, 2017. He thanks all Nigerians who have prayed ceaselessly for his recovery and well-being since the beginning of the health challenge.”
