Atiku claims APC has trained specialists in China on how to slow down card readers

FORMER vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has hatched an ingenious plan to slow down the efficiency of the card readers in some opposition strongholds in next Saturday's election.

On Saturday, Nigerians go to the polls to elect a new president with Alhaji Atiku standing as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC. With tension heightening as the elections draw near, Alhaji Abubakar has claimed that the APC has trained some operatives in China, who would be provided with devices on the day to slow down the card readers.

Speaking during an emergency meeting of his party's national executive committee meeting in Abuja yesterday, Alhaji Abubakar said the operatives were sent to China but they have returned and have been equipped with the handheld devices which they would deploy on election day. He claimed that they will be deployed to PDP strongholds in the southeast, south-south and north central geo-political zones.

Alhaji Abubakar said: “We have just discovered that the APC has hired many of their operatives and have taken them to China to be trained and they are back, equipped with devices that are meant to slow or fasten our card readers. So, if you are in the south-south, southeast and north central zones, you are likely to get your card readers to be slowed by those APC operatives.

“We have seen the machines, we have interviewed some of those who have gone on this training and we have passed that information to the campaign council to pass to you. If you are from the northwest or northeast, the tendency is that they will use these machines to fast-track the readings of your card readers so that many of their supporters can vote while disenfranchising the other three zones.

He also regretted the trouble Nigerians had to go through as a result of the postponement of the elections, noting that the sacrifice was in furtherance of the nation’s democracy. Alhaji Abubakar dismissed the democratic credentials of President Buhari, who he said had never struggled for the entrenchment of democracy in the country.
