Inec denies report that Atiku offered its resident electoral commissioner $1m and a house in Dubai

NIGERIA'S Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) has denied media reports that former vice president and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar offered it a $1m bribe ahead of next weekend's elections.

On Saturday, Nigeria go to the polls in what is a tight presidential race between incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Alhaji Abubakar of the PDP. It has been rumoured that Alhaji Abubakar offered the Inec resident electoral commissioner in Adamawa State $1m and the gift of a house in Dubai to rig the elections in his favour.

Debunking the story, Inec has denied the report, describing it as fake. In a tweet on its Twitter page, Inec  urged Nigerians to ignore such reports, stating that its resident electoral commissioner (Rec) in Adamawa State did not receive any offer from Atiku.

Inec's tweet read: “Fake news alert: The Adamawa Inec Rec completely disassociates himself from the allegation that he had an offer of $1m and a house in Dubai as no offer whatsoever was ever made to him by anyone.”

Meanwhile, Inec has ordered the continuation of political campaigns until Thursday following the postponement of the presidential election until February 23. On March 9, governorship and state house of assembly elections will take place.
