Lagos Island, Victoria and Lekki neighbourhoods to face severe power cuts over recent flooding

RESIDENTS of the high brow areas of Lagos metropolis affected by the recent heavy flooding face the threat of major power loss after the local electricity company revealed that the crisis could result in major disruptions.

 

Over the last week, Lagos suburbs Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki have been affected by severe flooding that has cut off entire communities and turned streets into rivers. In response the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Ekedc) announced that there would be power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and its environs as the company’s injection substations and equipment submerged in the flood.

Godwin Idemudia, the Ekedc general manager, corporate communications, said that the company was having challenges in almost all its injection substations as a result of the flood from heavy rains on Saturday. He added that some of Ekedc transformers in the areas have been submerged and the management of the company had directed that transmission be de-loaded in the affected areas for safety.

 

He said that the sub-stations affected by the flood included Lekki Transmission Station, Agungi , Lekki, Ademola and Anifowoshe. Mr Idemudia appealed to the customers to show understanding over the inconvenience the outage had caused.

 

“Victoria Garden City, Water Front, Maroko and Oniru Injection Stations are completely out and we need to look at the extent of the effect of the flood on our equipment. However, we are presently working round the clock to restore supply to our esteemed customers,” he added.
