Boko Haram threaten to kill Leah Shabiru unless the government gives in to its demands

BOKO Haram has threatened to kill abducted Dapchi schoolgirl Leah Shabiru and two other hostages it is holding within a month unless the Nigerian government responds to its recent set of demands concerning their release.

In March this year, Boko Haram raided Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) in Dapchi, Borno State, kidnapping 111 students. It later released 105 of them, saying five of the girls had died in captivity but is holding on to Leah and her continued detention has sparked an international campaign to secure her release.

Apparently, talks between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram are ongoing but the terrorist sect is not happy with the slow pace of the negotiations. Frustrated with not getting its way, Boko Haram has already killed Saifura Khorsa, a midwife with the International Committee of Red Cross, (ICRC) who was recently kidnapped from Kala-Balge in  Borno State.

Boko Haram has now threatened to kill Hauwa Liman and Alice Ngaddah who were abducted alongside Khorsa in March, as well as Leah. Four soldiers and policemen and three humanitarian workers were killed in the deadly attack in Rann, in Kala-Balge Local Government Area.

In a video message, the Boko Haram insurgents claimed that they had contacted the government over the captives but did not get any response. A spokesman for the sect said that as a result of the stance by the government, their captives will be punished.

He added: “We contacted the government through writing and also sent audio messages but the government has ignored us, so, here is a message of blood. The other nurse and midwife will be executed in a similar manner in one month, including Leah Shabiru.”

Meanwhile, ICRC spokesman, Aleksandra Mosimann, has condemned the killing of Ms Khorsa and described the action as sad while calling for the immediate release of the two other hostages still in captivity. Also, the US has condemned the murder of Ms Khorsa, describing it as a heinous and inhuman act.
