Gombe's Governor Dankwambo throws his hat into the ring as another presidential candidate

GOMBE State governor Ibrahim Dankwambo has formally declared his intention to contest for the presidency in 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) joining the growing list of hopeful candidates.

Already, the PDP has a long list of presidential hopefuls including former vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Bukola Saraki, Sule Lamido, Ahmed Makarfi, Attahiru Bafarawa,  Taminu Turaki and Ibrahim Shekarau. Governor Dankwambo has now thrown his hat into the ring, making his position known yesterday during a meeting with PDP delegates from the north-east geo-political zone.

He said: “There have been calls for me across the country to contest for the presidency in 2019, however I feel it is pertinent to seek the consent of you the delegates from my zone before I throw my hat into the contest. Therefore, I have shown interest and counting on your support I will contest for the PDP presidential ticket come 2019.

“After wide consultations with party members and Nigerians of diverse backgrounds, I, Dr Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo will be running for office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the platform of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party."

At yesterday's meeting Governor Dankwambo said Nigeria’s next president ought to come from the northeast. He also said all interested candidates from the zone should be allowed to showcase themselves while the most qualified should emerge.

Speaking on the  recent defection of top ranking members of the  All Progressives Congress to the party, Governor Dankwambo described the move as a reflection of the fact that the PDP has been reformed and repositioned. He urged existing members to welcome the new members saying the defectors should be accepted with an open heart and be given an equal opportunity as others who have been in the party.
