Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme looks set to return to action against Cameroon

SUPER Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has expressed relief that goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has returned from injury and will now be available for the World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon after being out of action for two months.

Nigeria's first choice goalkeeper Ikeme, missed the end of last season games for Wolverhampton Wanderers due to injury. He was absent when the Super Eagles played Corsica and Togo in friendly games last month and also missed the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in Uyo earlier this month.

Over the last week, the goalkeeper posted pictures of himself closing in on a return as his Championship team get set for pre-season training. Ikeme has been doing serious workouts ahead of the new season and looks set to be ready for Nigeria’s tie against Cameroon in the World Cup 2018 qualifier.

With his imminent return for both club and country, Daniel Akpeyi’s future in the senior national team is in serious doubt. Akepyi broke into the team and won the confidence of coach  Rohr ahead of Dele Alampasu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa in the absence of Ikeme but after the 0-2 loss against South Africa, he was faulted for the goals conceded by the Nigeria media.

Mr Rohr confirmed after the game that Ikeme’s return will, no doubt, see him reclaim his number one shirt for the clash against Cameroon. It appears that the Wolves man is well on course to be back for the game after his injury troubles.
