Lagos trader charged to court for assault after beating up wife brutally for refusing him sex

LAGOS trader Victor Akpan has been charged to court for assault by the state police command after he beat his wife up and nearly made her lose an eye for refusing to have sex with him.

Mr Akpan, 38, appeared before the Ikeja Magistrates Court yesterday for allegedly hitting his wife’s eye with his foot after she denied him sex. Prosecutor, Sergeant Innocent Odugbo told the court that the offence was committed on June 16 at the couple's residence on Budland Street in Ojodu Berger, on the outskirts of Lagos.

Sergeant Odugbo said: “The accused wanted to make love to his wife in the evening and she declined and he then kicked her and injured her eyes. If the woman had not run out of the house, she would have lost her right eye because of the beating.”

According to the prosecution, the wife, named Uche, was then rushed to a nearby police station with blood stains on her face. Sergeant Odugbo said the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Responding to the charge, Mr Akpan pleaded not guilty. Following his plea, the magistrate, Mrs S K Matepo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until July 23.
