With Independence Day fast approaching, I would like to believe that President Tinubu is working on his October 1 speech. I look forward to hearing policy initiatives like this on the day

Ayo Akinfe

[1] My government will be holding an immediate summit with all of Nigeria’s 36 state governors where we will tell them that as from October 1 2025, we plan to initiate the scrapping of the federal allocation regime. They should thus launch plans to get their states self-reliant

[2] With immediate effect, my administration will scrap government subsidies on all religious pilgrimages. If you want to go to Saudi Arabia or Israel, you are on your own

Were I in President Tinubu’s shoes, I would appoint a minister of state for cash crop production with a mandate to make rubber a national money spinner

Ayo Akinfe

[1] On August 3 1900, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company was founded by a gentleman named Harvey Firestone. Cashing in on the booming automobile market, Mr Firestone soon saw the huge potential for tyres

[2] Now, in 1926, the company opened one of the world's biggest rubber plantations in Liberia, West Africa, spanning over 1m acres. Why Nigeria did not seek a similar facility at independence is beyond me

I have repeatedly said that the solution to Nigeria’s socio-economic woes can only be provided by her 36 states. President Tinubu should hold a summit with these 10 governors to kickstart the process

[1] Lagos State

The Lagos State governor arguably has the toughest task of any politician in Nigeria today. He has to run a state of 22m people and a metropolis of 12m souls. Mass transit remains a nightmare, so Governor Sanwoolu needs to build an underground metro and construct an overground heavy goods network that will among other things allow goods to be moved from Apapa by rail.

I would like to see President Tinubu inaugurate a Vision 2050 Committee that will draw up a roadmap for the rest of the 21st century which will look something like this

Ayo Akinfe

[1] By 2050, Nigeria is predicted to become the world’s third most populous nation after China and India. We owe it to humanity to also become the world’s third largest manufacturer by then. We pledge to achieve this manufacturing target by any means necessary

[2] By 2050 Nigeria must account for at least 20% of all electric cars manufactured worldwide

[3] By 2050, Nigeria must account for the production of at least 15% of all pharmaceuticals worldwide

With it looking like we will have the first ever female US president this November, I hope President Tinubu is working on a list of requests for Kamala Harris which look something like this

Ayo Akinfe

[1] For me, climate control is at the heart of US foreign policy and I think this is an area where Nigeria can make a killing. President Timubu should be demanding at least $10bn worth of US investment in the sector annually. This capital should be invested in solar farms, panel manufacturing plants, windmills, hydro-electric power plants, etc
